Whether it is for a seasonal upturn in demand or simply the natural growth of the organization, one of the biggest hurdles a manager will face is trying to find a steady flow of talent. And while working with a staffing agency is always an ideal way to ensure you have the workers you need on-demand, there is another tactic that could prove fruitful – a talent pipeline.

Simply put, a talent pipeline is a group of passive candidates that you’ve engaged to some degree or another to fill roles within your organization as they become available. This can prove incredibly useful as it gives you quick, relatively easy access to talent. However, much like anything, there is a right way and a wrong way to utilize this tool, and today, we are going to give you some tips to use your talent pipeline the right way!

Prioritize

First and foremost, you are going to want to focus on finding candidates with the skills that your business recruits for regularly but has a hard time finding. This will increase your chances of having someone on the ready should you have a difficult to fill role open up.

Pre-screen

While most organizations ask for them, it seems few doing anything worthwhile with them – references. When it comes to building your pipeline, try and pre-screen who you think are top performers. Get a sense of who they are from their references and whether or not they’d be a good fit for your organization.

Stay organized

Whether your organization is big or small, and whether you regularly hire in large volume or infrequently, we can’t stress how important it is to stay organized. Create a shared working document that can act as a source of truth among all team members involved in the hiring process.

Be respectful

It is essential to be respectful of your pipeline. These are talented men and women, after all, ones who you would be open to working with. As such, it can go a long way to provide courtesy to them, keep them informed of your process, and be kind and accommodating whenever possible. After all, there is a good chance you will be contacting them out of the blue and asking them to join you quickly.

Stay visible

Although the point of this whole exercise is to build your own talent pipeline, you should also be aware that many “talent” would be looking to join a pipeline themselves. When you stay visible and are open about your intentions, you’ll likely find some good candidates reaching out to through their name in the hat.
