Bad Work Habits You Should Ditch Immediately

Work habits can be good or bad. For instance, beginning your workday with a healthy breakfast is a good habit that fosters productivity. On the other hand, it is sometimes easy to develop bad work habits that make it virtually impossible to achieve the best possible results on a day-to-day basis.

Identifying bad work habits is one of the first steps toward becoming a high-performing employee. Now, let’s look at five common bad work habits — and how to avoid them.

1. Skipping Breaks

Businesses offer breaks for a reason — to help employees step away from their daily responsibilities and recharge. Although it may be tempting to work through a break, you need to take advantage of it. In doing so, you can enjoy a few moments away from work, take a deep breath and return to the task at hand feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

2. Procrastinating

Don’t be the employee who puts the “pro” in procrastination. Instead, commit to a work task and do everything possible to complete it on deadline. If you believe you are falling behind and won’t be able to complete a task on schedule, let your superior know. That way, you can work with your superior to find the best way to finish the task and get help to prevent procrastination from becoming an ongoing problem.

3. Oversharing

Time is of the essence, and you and your colleagues want to do everything possible to make the most of it. To accomplish your goal, be direct any time you receive questions. Clear, concise responses to questions from peers and superiors ensure you can provide these individuals with the information they need, exactly when they need it. Plus, you can avoid oversharing that otherwise leads to tangents that hamper workplace productivity.

4. Avoiding Sick Days

You’re tough and resilient, so you probably never want to take a sick day. But you need to think of your company and your team before you try to work through illness. A sick employee is usually less productive and more prone to errors than a healthy one. Also, if you go to work sick, you risk infecting other employees.

5. Ignoring Your Workspace

Transform your workspace into a happy, healthy environment where you can perform amazing work every day. Setting up pictures of loved ones around your desk or hanging inspirational quotes on your cubicle’s walls are just two of the things that you can do to make your workspace work for you.
