Your job interview just ended — now, you need to put yourself in a position to move forward in the hiring process. Following a job interview, there are four things that you can do to set yourself up for success:
1. Find Out the Next Steps
Ask an interviewer about the next steps in the hiring process. This allows you to establish realistic expectations about when you might hear back from a company.
Let the interviewer know that you are happy to provide any additional information to help them evaluate your candidacy, too. In doing so, you can make it easy for an interviewer to gain insights into your background and expertise so he or she can make an informed hiring decision.
2. Review the Interview Results
Make a list of the questions you were asked during an interview, along with the responses you provided. Create this list right away — because the longer you wait to do so, the more likely it becomes that you’ll forget interview questions that were asked or responses that you provided.
Every interview provides a learning opportunity, and you can review the interviewer’s questions and your responses to see if there is a potential fit for both sides. You can also use this information to help you prepare for a follow-up interview or future interviews with other companies.
3. Reach Out to the Hiring Manager
Send an email to the hiring manager — ideally, within the first few hours after your interview. This email can include a few sentences that highlight your interest in the position and why you believe you are the best fit for it.
In addition, send emails to any staff members you met during your interview. These emails allow you to express your gratitude to staff members, as well as show them that you would relish the opportunity to work with them in the future.
4. Contact Your References
Get in touch with your references so they know to expect a call or email on your behalf. Provide your references with as much information as you can about your potential new employer as well.
Lastly, give your references information about the job you are trying to land. This information can help your references show your potential new employer why you are a good fit for a particular role.
