10 Ways to Stay Productive While Working from Home

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic now requires many employees to work from home. Yet, the temptation to check your social media feeds, watch TV, and engage in other non-work activities while working from home can be overwhelming. If you are not careful, you could waste work time and resources on various non-work activities, which can hamper your productivity.

Your business expects the best out of you, and you expect the best from yourself, too. As such, you need to find ways to stay productive every day, even if you’re forced to work from home until the coronavirus pandemic passes.

There are many things you can do to maximize your productivity while you work from home during the COVID-19 crisis, including:

1. Create a Work Schedule

Start work around the same time each day and experiment with different work schedules. Keep in mind, however, that the coronavirus pandemic is constantly evolving. Thus, you should maintain a flexible work schedule and be ready to adjust it as needed.

2. Develop a Productive Workspace

Set up a space in your home where you can focus exclusively on work tasks. This workspace should include any essentials you need to stay productive, like a computer and internet connection.

3. Eliminate Distractions

Put your smartphone on silent or activate its “do not disturb” mode while you work. You should also remove any other potential distractions from your workspace.

4. Schedule Breaks

Take a break from work at different times during the day. Use your breaks to step away from your workspace, enjoy a snack or lunch, and relax.

5. Stay Hydrated

Drink water so you can stay hydrated throughout the day. If possible, keep a glass of water or a water bottle with you at all times, as this allows you to avoid frequent trips to the kitchen to quench your thirst.

6. Take Advantage of Work Blocks

Resist the urge to work non-stop for eight hours or longer. Instead, split up your workday into short, manageable blocks, and use breaks to recharge throughout the day.

7. Establish Boundaries

Let family members know your work hours. Also, ensure family members know to avoid your workspace while you work, unless there is an emergency.

8. Eat a Healthy Lunch

Eat a lunch that contains fresh fruits and vegetables and can provide you with the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals you need to rejuvenate your body and mind. In addition, avoid fatty foods at lunch, as these foods may make you feel lethargic as the workday progresses.

9. Track Your Time

Monitor the times you work and what you get done during these periods. With this data in hand, you can see exactly how productive you are during the workweek.

10. Wind Down at the End of the Workday

Finish your workday and return to your home activities. Furthermore, once your workday is complete, get plenty of rest.
