2. Open the Windows
Crack open a window to let cool air enter your work area. Of course, if you have an air conditioner running in your workplace, you may want to keep the windows closed to maximize its effectiveness.
3. Stay Hydrated
Drink water throughout the work day. You should try to drink eight, 8-oz. glasses of water daily, as consuming a sufficient amount of water can help keep your body cool. Plus, staying hydrated helps prevent dry mouth, reduce the risk of mental fatigue, and ensure the body’s muscles and joints can work properly.
4. Schedule Regular Breaks
Take advantage of work breaks. Remember, heat puts stress on the body, and it can cause you to feel mentally and physically exhausted. By taking breaks during the day, you can enjoy a few minutes away from your work. And during these periods, you can relax, grab a snack or beverage, and return to work feeling ready to do your best once again.
5. Dress Appropriately
Wear light-colored fabrics in lieu of dark-colored ones during summer. Light-colored shirts and pants absorb less heat than dark-colored options, so they can help you stay cool at work. Also, wear loose-fitting clothing that helps air circulate along the skin and reduce the impact of summer heat on the body.
6. Eat Healthy Foods
Avoid a heavy lunch, as this can cause you to feel tired and sluggish. Instead, enjoy small snacks and light meals throughout the work day, so your body won’t need to exert excess amounts of energy to break down heavy foods. You should also choose nutrient-rich foods like fruits and vegetables that help replenish the body’s electrolytes.
7. Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion
Keep an eye out for heavy sweating, dizziness, headaches, and other signs of heat exhaustion. If you experience any symptoms of heat exhaustion, take a break. In addition, if heat exhaustion symptoms do not disappear within a few minutes of onset, seek medical attention.
