7 Things You Should Do After an Interview

A job interview provides a golden opportunity to show you are the best candidate for a particular job. When the interview ends, there are things you can do to put yourself in a great position to land your dream role, too.  

Some of the best things to do after an interview include: 

1. Verify the Next Steps in the Hiring Process 

Ask your interviewer about the next steps following your meeting. The interviewer can shed light on how he or she will approach the hiring process. Request specifics when you engage with your interviewer about the next steps in the hiring process as well. That way, you can find out when you may be asked to move forward in this process.  

2. Analyze Your Interview Performance 

Take a few minutes immediately following your interview to assess your performance. Consider how you responded to your interviewer’s questions and your demeanor throughout the meeting. Also, think about ways you could have improved your performance. Once you understand how you performed during your interview, you can apply your insights to future interviews.  

3. Follow Up with a Thank-You Note 

Email a thank-you note to your interviewer within 24 hours of your interview. Make the note brief and let your interviewer know you appreciate the opportunity to interview for a role with their organization. You can also use your note to let your interviewer know that you are still interested in the vacancy and to follow up with any concerns or questions. 

4. Engage with Your Interviewer Via Social Media  

Send a LinkedIn networking request to your interviewer after your meeting. If the interviewer accepts your request, this may be a positive sign that he or she wants you to move forward in the hiring process.  

5. Share Supporting Materials with Your Interviewer 

Provide your interviewer with a copy of your portfolio or any other materials he or she requested during your interview. This information should be sent to your interviewer within 24 hours of your meeting. Furthermore, let your interviewer know that you are happy to provide him or her with additional supporting materials as needed.   

6. Connect with Your Professional References 

Contact your professional references to let them know that your interviewer may be in contact with them in the near future. This allows you to give your references a heads up about a potential phone call or email, so they can get ready to share details about why you may be the best candidate for a particular role.   

7. Remain Patient  

Be conscientious of your interviewer’s time. Remember, your interviewer may evaluate multiple candidates, so he or she can find the right candidate. You should follow up with your interviewer if it has been a week or longer since your interview and only if he or she asked you to do so.
