5 Tips to Stay Focused While Working Remotely 1

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led many businesses to let workers complete tasks remotely. But, working remotely can be a challenge, due to the fact that it can be easy to get distracted.

How to Avoid Distractions and Stay on Track While Working Remotely

There are several things you can do to minimize distractions and stay focused while working remotely, such as:

1. Create a Dedicated Space for Working Remotely

Set up a home office or another designated area where you can focus exclusively on work. The space should offer ample room for your computer, notebook, and other work essentials. It should also provide you with a quiet environment where you won’t have to worry about interruptions throughout the workday.

2. Avoid Your Social Media Accounts

Log off Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms and avoid them as much as possible during the workday. Instead, use social media access as a reward for a job well done. To do so, complete tasks throughout the workday and reward yourself with a few minutes of time on social media afterward. This ensures you can give yourself rewards throughout the workday that will help you stay motivated. Plus, you can focus solely on completing myriad work tasks without getting distracted by your social media feeds.

3. Establish a Routine

Get in a work groove by creating a routine that helps you prepare for your workday. For instance, you can set an alarm to wake up for work around the same time each morning. You can then enjoy a healthy breakfast, dress in comfortable clothing, and begin your workday around the same time each day. With a routine in place, you can put yourself in a great position to feel your best the moment you start working and stay focused throughout the day.

4. Take Breaks

Resist the urge to work for extended periods of time. Conversely, you should schedule breaks throughout the workday. These breaks give you an opportunity to rejuvenate your body and mind. Along with regular work breaks, schedule time for lunch. You may also want to set a timer for your breaks, so you can avoid spending too much time away from work.

5. Stay Connected to Your Colleagues

Engage with colleagues whenever possible. You can use Slack and other online messaging tools to stay connected to your peers throughout the workday. In addition, you can engage with your colleagues via phone calls and video meetings. Regardless of how you connect with your peers, you can use these interactions to communicate and collaborate with one another. Best of all, peer engagement ensures you can feel part of a team, which can help you stay focused at work.
