Why It’s Hard to Hire Warehouse Workers and What to Do About It

Why It’s Hard to Hire Warehouse Workers and What to Do About It 1

State of the Hiring Market

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 22 million jobs were lost as a result of the national shutdown that took place across the country. Ever since appropriate adjustments have been made to adapt to the pandemic (such as quarantine orders) the economy has managed to start swinging back appropriately, with over 18 million jobs restored since March 2020.

Despite this job uptick, a trend has become more and more apparent since the pandemic began. The move to remote work has fundamentally changed much of the standard workforce structure that has been the basis for how businesses have traditionally operated for decades. With this move, even though vaccines are available and many businesses are returning to working in public spaces again, the urge for workers themselves to return to work hasn’t returned. Many have grown accustomed to not working or to working remotely, so this has led to many on-site jobs becoming understaffed.

Why Warehouse Workers are Even Harder to Find

Warehouse jobs at one point in time were considered the perfect career space for displaced workers and a means to increase productivity for the retail industry. Many iconic retail companies such as Walmart, Amazon, Lowe’s, and Costco use warehouses to reliably store and then transport cargo to be sold to customers. Many of these same companies have been creating hundreds of thousands of jobs to increase their productivity flow and shipping and handling effectiveness.

Unfortunately, even with incentives such as competitive wages and free college opportunities, the industry is facing a downturn. The pandemic has greatly increased the number of people who work from home and have become accustomed to not working in a public space. In addition to this, complaints about the cumbersome nature of working warehouse jobs (such as standing and lifting heavy cargo for 10 hours a day, six days a week) has turned many off from the idea. Warehouse jobs have some of the largest worker turnover rate out there, with half of the employees quitting after their first day.
