Do You Have an Employee Who Is Stressed Out? Here's How to Help Them

Updated: May 22

Job stress has increased dramatically over the past few decades, yet employers are often unprepared to deal with stressed-out employees. Fortunately, with the right approach to help a worker who is stressed out, your company can boost employee loyalty, retention, and satisfaction.

Now, let's look at four tips so you can help an employee lower his or her stress levels and feel happy and healthy at work.

1. Listen to Your Employees

Encourage employees to come forward with any concerns and questions. That way, workers can share their stressors before they lead to health or work problems.

Show empathy at any time a worker shares his or her concerns and questions. Consider the employee's perspective and try not to judge. Instead, ask questions and work with an employee to find ways to help him or her cope with stress.

2. Create a Positive Culture

Gather employee feedback to learn how workers feel about your business' culture. Then, use this feedback to identify ways to enhance your company's culture and ensure that your work environment fosters personal and professional growth.

Make minor changes to your company's culture and monitor employees' responses to them. Meet with workers regularly to check the pulse of your workforce and implement additional changes to your business' culture if employees continue to feel stressed out at work.

3. Offer a Flexible Work Schedule

If possible, provide employees with multiple work schedule options. Ensure employees work a schedule that falls in line with their family responsibilities and helps them maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Give employees the opportunity to work remotely as well. In addition to helping employees alleviate stress, providing employees with the ability to work outside of a traditional office setting shows that you trust them to get work done from any location, at any time. Therefore, by empowering your employees with the flexibility to work remotely, you could help your company become more productive and efficient than ever before.

4. Revamp Your Workplace

Create a relaxation area at work where employees can take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday activities. This area can include couches, bean bags, and other comfortable furniture that allow employees to wind down as needed throughout the workday.

Also, you can provide a game or meditation room that promotes stress relief. A game room can include a pool table, ping-pong table, and other games to help employees temporarily take their minds off work. Meanwhile, a meditation room offers a quiet space where employees can relax, reflect, and recharge.
