Doing your job and doing it well should always be top of your mind when you're at work; however, with the summer months in full swing, you may notice that you have another task on your plate – trying to keep cool.
Whether you are sitting in an office, working on a warehouse floor, or out under the sun at a job site, staying cool should be a top priority for you, not only so you can perform, but so you can do so with your health and wellbeing in tack. Sadly, as most of us can testify, this can be easier said than done.
Today, we are going to give you some hot tips for staying cool in the peak of the summer heat.
Wear Light Clothes
This one may seem a little obvious, but you'd be amazed at how many people complain about the heat while wearing heavy, dark, full-length clothing. When it comes to picking your summer attire, it is best to go with light colors whenever possible, short sleeves if the option is available to you, and it is a good practice to wear natural fabrics like cotton. And if you find yourself working somewhere with a strict dress code or uniform, don't be afraid to talk to your manager about making allowances during the sweltering days.
Keep the Windows Closed
Admittedly, a cool breeze can feel nice, however, when you open the window, essentially all you are doing is letting hot air in, that is unless it is cooler outside than in (which doesn't often happen in the summer). Ideally, if you can keep shades drawn, windows up, and let the AC do its work, you'll find yourself much happier from 9-5.
Keep Your Hydration Up
When it is hot outside (or inside for that matter) chances are you are going to sweat, which in case you didn't know is your body's way of naturally cooling itself. However, excessive sweating can leave you dehydrated, especially if you aren't regularly topping yourself off with water.
Eat Smaller and Lighter Meals
The larger the meal you eat, the harder your body has to work to digest it, and when your body is working, it produces heat. In order to counteract this, try and stick to smaller and lighter meals, especially on the hot days. If you don't feel that you'll be satisfied, however, after a lighter meal while working hard, try eating small snacks spread throughout the day.
Avoid Caffeine
While it can be hard to imagine starting your day with a cup of coffee or tea, skipping your morning boost can help you stay cool. Caffeine has the side effect of increasing heart rate and blood flow, which speeds your metabolism and cause your body temperature to rise. And if you think you're clever by swapping out coffee for a sugary beverage, don't, because high sugar foods carry with them a similar effect.
