Make the most of your summer job in the light industrial sector. Plan ahead for your summer work. When you arrive for work, you'll be ready to hit the ground running.
The summer toolkit below details must-haves for a light industrial role.
Identification
Find out how many forms of ID are required by your light industrial employer and which ones are acceptable prior to your first day. Your driver's license, Social Security card, or other forms of ID may be necessary for your employer to set you up on its payroll.
Notepad and Pen
These are essential for taking notes and learning the ins and outs of your summer job.
Safety Gear
Safety glasses, gloves, or other safety gear may be necessary to ensure you can work a light industrial job without putting yourself at risk.
Ask your employer if you need to pick up personal protective equipment (PPE) before your first day. If not, your employer should provide you with this equipment.
Do not perform work tasks if your employer wants you to complete a task but you don't have the proper safety equipment. In this instance, share your concerns with a manager. You can also report this to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Appropriate Clothing and Footwear
Get information from your employer about what clothing you are allowed to wear at work. It is generally best to wear clothing that is both comfortable and durable. You may want to avoid loose clothing since it could get stuck in work equipment. Furthermore, you should wear apparel that allows other employees to see you but won't distract them from their work.
In terms of footwear, closed-toes shoes may be ideal. Work boots may serve you well at work. Do not wear sandals, as doing so can be dangerous.
A Water Bottle
Working a summer job in a light industrial space can make you sweat. With a water bottle at your disposal, you'll be able to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Lunch and Snacks
Take lunch to work with you or make plans to pick one up during one of your breaks. Treat yourself to a healthy and hunger-satisfying meal during your lunchtime. It may be a good idea to pack snacks you can enjoy during your breaks as well.
Do not forgo lunchtime and snack breaks. If you do so on your first day and moving forward in your light industrial role, this can lead to a bad work habit. Over the course of a work day, you may feel fatigued. As a result, you may be prone to mistakes.
A Positive Attitude
Be prepared for work challenges. At the same time, feel confident in your ability to learn your job and do well in it.
Questions
Don't hesitate to ask your manager and coworkers questions relating to your role. This will help you learn the role's ins and outs and become a key contributor to your company's success.
