How to Ace Your Next Job Interview

Updated: May 22

You want your next job interview to be your final interview — because, if you ace your interview, you'll put yourself in a position to land your dream job. Yet, uncertainty reigns supreme, particularly when it comes to interviews. If you know how to plan for an interview, however, you can get ready to show a prospective employer why you're the best fit for a particular role.

There are several things you can do to prepare to ace an interview, such as:

1. Learn About a Prospective Employer

Visit a prospective employer's website and learn as much as you can about the company. That way, you'll know what the business is all about before your interview.

It also helps to take notes as you view a prospective employer's website. You may use your notes to craft questions for your interviewer as well.

2. Read the Job Description

Find out what a prospective employer wants from a candidate. If you read a job description closely, you can evaluate your fit with a company. Plus, you can use the description to ensure you are prepared for any interview questions that may come your way.

Consider the company's perspective as you review a job description, too. The business wants to find the right candidate for a specific role, and the company uses its job description to explain the skills it wants from a candidate. If you can highlight how your skills match those outlined in a job description, you can make it easy for an interviewer to see you're the right candidate.

3. Conduct a Mock Interview

Make a list of questions you believe a prospective employer will ask during an interview. These questions may be associated with your professional expertise, why you want to join a company, and how you'll contribute to the business.

Ask a friend or family member to conduct a mock interview. This ensures you can become more comfortable with an interview and understand how to respond to a prospective employer's questions.

4. Dress for Success

Wear the appropriate attire for an interview. If you are unsure about what to wear, get in touch with a company to find out before your interview.

Ensure that any clothing or accessories you wear to your interview is clean and tidy. You should also avoid any apparel that is damaged or worn out.

5. Follow Up with Your Interviewer

Thank your interviewer for taking the time to meet with you and follow up with him or her after your interview. You should send a follow-up email to your interviewer within a few hours of your meeting.

Continue to keep in contact with your interviewer in the days and weeks following your interview. If you aced the interview, you likely won't need to wait long before you hear back from your interviewer about the next steps in the hiring process.
