Happy New Year! 2026 is almost here, and now's the perfect time to start preparing your New Year's resolutions. If you want to land a new job in the new year, plenty of work lies ahead. With the right resolutions, you can start your job search strong in the new year. Plus, you can put yourself in a great position to land your dream role and take the next step forward in your career.

If you're unsure of what New Year's resolutions will work well for you as you search for a new job in 2026, there's no need to stress. Here are five resolutions to consider.

Resolution #1: Update Your Resume Regularly

First and foremost, refresh your resume any time you apply for a job. Review your resume carefully and make sure it lines up with the role you want to land. Also, proofread your resume. Otherwise, if your resume is loaded with spelling and grammatical errors, a business is likely to dismiss it right away. Don't forget to format your resume for desktop computers and mobile devices, too.

Resolution #2: Grow Your Professional Network

If you want to become a leader in the future, capitalize on every networking opportunity that comes your way. Connect with current and former coworkers and supervisors on LinkedIn. Additionally, join LinkedIn Groups and contribute to them as often as you can. Over time, you'll build meaningful relationships that could help you secure the job you want.

Outside of LinkedIn, attend networking events held virtually and close to home. Remember, the more professional relationships you have, the better off you'll be as you try to further your career.

Resolution #3: Bolster Your Skill Set

Sign up for a class or workshop to learn a new skill. Think about the skills you will need to achieve your career goals. Next, you can search for training opportunities to develop the skills you need to succeed. Give 100% to any training program you join. If you encounter challenges along the way, try to stay the course. As you make headway, you'll enhance your skill set and be better equipped than ever before to make a positive impression with employers in search of top talent.

Resolution #4: Fine-Tune Your Interview Skills

Ask family members and friends for help with upcoming interviews. For example, you can host a mock interview with family and friends. This is an opportunity to account for questions you'll get asked when you meet with a company and how you'll respond to them. As you become more comfortable answering tough interview questions, you'll have no trouble giving thoughtful answers to any questions you get when you talk with prospective employers.

Resolution #5: Partner with a Staffing Firm

Speak with a staffing agency that will get to know you and what you want to accomplish in your career. This agency can put you in touch with employers in your industry in need of talent to fill temporary and permanent roles. It will also assist you with your resume and keep you updated about any career opportunities that match your expectations.
